A smoother, sweeter premium Single Malt Scotch Whisky, seasoned by the bracing Atlantic Ocean winds where the lowlands meet the sea – our goal is to produce nothing less than the greatest whisky in the world.
When the distillery commences production, we will produce three separate and distinct styles of spirit whiskies which will be available for sale as 4, 5, and 7-year old and which will appeal to a range of customers across a variety of markets.
ARDGOWAN HEAVILY PEATED: This is a full-flavoured single malt, rich and powerful, and very peaty and smoky in character. This whisky will be for sale early as the peated character will be a dominant flavour requiring less maturation as delicate flavours are repressed through the peating. Small volumes will be available in year four of operation.
ARDGOWAN LIGHTLY PEATED: This is a more “coastal” style of whisky with more weight and power. Double-distilled with the peat giving structure but not overwhelming the flavour profile, small volumes will be for sale in year five of operation. The style exploits the proximity to the sea and the more delicate flavours from a lowland whisky.
ARDGOWAN UNPEATED: A traditional lowland style of whisky distilled to give a light, floral and delicate character of spirit. This unpeated traditional lowland will be Ardgowan’s flagship Single Malt represent the bulk of the whisky produced at Ardgowan. While small volumes of a 5-year-old will be available, the principal production will be for a 7-year-old Single Malt Whisky. Additional aged products and various expressions will be available as the distillery and stock matures.
BLENDED MALT: Working with whisky experts, a blended Malt will be brought to the market in advance of whisky being distilled at Ardgowan alongside other premium third party products. These products will be available on-line, through the shop at the distillery site and small quantities will be introduced to other exclusive retailers.
THE BARLEY AND THE YEAST Barley grows well in Scotland, and is the country’s most popular crop for growing. The climate lends itself to barley that is not forced and is ideal for malting. Home-grown Scottish malt is perfect for mashing, producing a sugar and enzymes mix that is perfect for Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Yeasts have been selected not just for their alcohol yield but for their ability to bring specific flavours to the whisky.
MATURATION It is often said that the wood makes the Scotch: all our casks will be oak, and will be ‘seasoned’ by either American bourbon or Spanish sherry, which help to provide flavour and colour. Top quality casks will be sourced through the executive team’s network of international contacts. With careful cask selection it is now possible to release a distillery’s first Single Malt Scotch Whisky shortly after the spirit’s fourth birthday. Every additional year of age improves a single malt, giving it a more complex taste and allowing it to command a higher sales premium.
